Residents of the Good Hope Housing Scheme, East Coast Demerara, are once again annoyed with the actions of a contracting company over the works carried out on one of its main access bridges.
Reports are that since February the bridge which links Good Hope with Lusignan had been under construction, however; the structure seems to be deteriorating as time passes.
Some residents claim that the services of “Bovell Construction” and a sub-contractor “Narine” were rendered and the work executed to date has not been satisfactory.
The current state of the Good Hope Bridge with the rails taken off and fine pieces of wood placed across the dismantled structure to act as a temporary walkway for villagers.
“They suppose to use greenheart but they use hardwood. They take off the rails and move more wood. This thing left like this for too long and them not doing their job properly,” said one man.
One woman said that her two children use this bridge everyday to go to school or lessons.
She said that it is very dangerous for young children and older folks, especially during the evening when there is hardly any light available for people to see where they are going.
“Them not telling we nothing. Them just come and Saturday them move the rails from the bridge. It got couple fine pieces of wood left. Them do more damage than good here. Vehicle can’t pass and if somebody fall in or some li’l child fall over what going to happen?”
At the location on Saturday, an engineer by the name of “Rutherford” was called in. He immediately stopped the workers from continuing any works on the bridge, the villagers said.
The villagers are wondering when the bridge will finally be completed since it is an inconvenience to everyone for various reasons.
Vehicle operators have to drive all the way around the village to access their streets, children are put at risk and other persons have some difficulty visiting the market on the Public Road.
“The bridge was wider. Them should make a li’l walkway for pedestrians because when vehicle and car them passing some don’t wait. Them lessen the width of the bridge and ain’t doing nothing” complained another mother.
One young man said, “Is not like them not get pay to do the work. Is best them give somebody else the contract and let them do it right. Only God knows how much millions spent to do this li’l work”.
