The Berbice Chamber of Commerce and Development Authority (BCCDA) brought an end to their 2011 Inter Agency Softball 10/10 cricket competition, fund day and exhibition cricket matches with a presentation, awards ceremony and Cocktail held on Thursday July 28, 2011 at the Tennis Court of the Republic Bank, New Amsterdam Branch at New Street.
Tournament Coordinator Republic Bank Manager, Imran Saccoor, in his overview of the activity disclosed that the tournament was a resounding success, except for the inclement weather which caused them to defer the dates on a number of occasions. He stated that the tournament was so successful that within one year the tournament grew 10 times it magnitude in comparison to its inaugural year in 2010. Giving a comparison he stated that in 2010 they pocketed a profit of $17,860: and in 2011 they netted $196,606.
Although the venture is not a profit making exercise the funds generated goes back to the community to help with other projects and general community service. He stated that they plan to make the activity an annual affair during the August/September period each year and make it a two day affair. The Chamber is in discussion with the Ministry Of tourism to have it as part of the calendar of activities.
Next year, he stated they plan to make it 10 times bigger that this year. More teams are to be involved with added features and attraction including a Curry Cook Out, a Talent Spectacular Stage Show and Fair, a Grand Raffle drawing on the Spot and exhibition matches. He stated that it is also the intention of the Chamber to put up Sports Bikes and LCD Television among other attractions as the gate prize for patrons and a whopping purse for the winning team.
Entrance to patrons will be in the form of a raffle ticket which will be used towards the grand drawing.
The tournament saw 14 corporate teams participating include the telephone companies, beverage companies, and commercials banks, Karibee Rice, A. Ally and Sons among others. The Coordinator indicated that several other corporate teams and Clubs indicted their interest to join the 2011 competition but were denied due to time constraints since it was only a one day tournament.
Several special trophies were awarded during the ceremony including Farouk Husain of Memorex for scoring the highest individual score in the series 67, Joel Mannipen of Karibee Rice for the best bowling figure of 5 for 7, Khaimandass Kajmal from Karibee Rice was adjudge the Most Valuable Player of the Tournament, while Vishal Phillips of Memorex was adjudge the Man of the Match in the Finals.
Memorex Team collected a winners Cheque of $35,000, while runner Up New Building Society received $10,000 for placing second.
The winners of the gate prizes were also presented with their winnings the first Prize of one Black Berry cell phone went to Andre Singh, Dawan Barran received a DVD Player, Darsant Persaud won one Lazy Boy Suite, Dyianauth Budhram one Gents Cycle, Khemraj Jailall one MP3 Player, Radesh Garib One Samsung Phone while D. Jaumant collected One Radio.
The Chambers wishes to thank all those who participated and help to make the event a success. The ceremony was well attended by members from the corporate community and other prominent officials including West Indies test player Devendra Bishoo. (Samuel Whyte)
