…UG Berbice campus offers scholarships
The newly formed Angoy’s Avenue Scouts group, the newest group in Guyana, is already geared to receive significant assistance from some corporate entities including The University of Guyana Berbice campus and the Republic Bank, New Amsterdam Branch.
Some significant disclosures were made by the heads of those entities at a simple ceremony held at the Central Police Station Recreational Hall, recently, to honour the five persons from the Scout Group who were recently invested as Scout leaders by Commissioner of Police Henry Greene at a ceremony in Georgetown.
The five persons honoured and who are expected to lead the newly formed group in their charge forward are Police Corporal Trevor Jeffers, who is the leader of the group; Rural Corporal Deon Thomas; Neighbourhood police Ray Gilbert; Nicola Ferdinand and Marylyn Roberts.
The ceremony which was attended by Director of the University of Guyana Berbice Campus, Professor Dizal Samad; Republic Bank New Amsterdam Branch Manager Imran Sacoor; and senior and junior ranks of the B Division of the Guyana Police Force, and senior scouts, heard presentations from Professor Samad and Mr. Sacoor among others.
Professor Samad congratulated the scouts, especially the leaders, for their remarkable achievement in such a short time after being invested.
He promised to facilitate two short (crash) information technology courses for 40 of the senior scouts (15-19 years) including the leaders.
These courses would be held at the University during this month. He also promised to conduct a number of courses to help improve communication skills.
The professor’s offer came in direct response to the call by the Commissioner of Police for the scouts to be equipped with knowledge in Information Technology and other skills.

Sacoor also congratulated the group for the achievements so far and promised that Republic Bank for its part will organize courses in Micro management and small businesses for the youths.
Another offer by the Manager is that the bank will open accounts for the three most outstanding scouts. These scholarships would be based on their Education, Discipline and their all round ability.
Mr Sacoor also offered to reward the leaders with cash incentives if the scout membership can reach 500 within two months. The scout group, which was formed less than a month ago with 60 members, has since double that amount to 120.
Professor Samad subsequently chipped to match the Republic Bank offer by opening accounts for the better two scout leaders.
The group accommodates youths from seven to 19 years.
The group, so far, has undertaken a number of community outreach activities. One such activity saw the distribution of hampers to some less fortunate families mainly in the same Angoy’s Avenue area.
The leaders and some members of the private sector were loud in praise for Divisional Officer, Inspector Jairam Ramlakhan, who was instrumental in the formation of the group.
