– head, feet and hand injuries sustained by toddlers
Three-year-old Diana and two-year-old Dwayne Romascindo are currently nursing wounds in the Pediatric Ward of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) following an accident which occurred on July 24 in the North West District.
Reports are that the children who live at the Hosororo Village, were
“bracing on the house” with their aunt when a “drunk, unlicensed” teenage driver lost control of the speeding car that he was operating.
The car turned over several times and ended up in the yard where the children were standing.
Zeniffa Ghanie, the mother of the two children, said that the incident took place around 19:45hrs on the day in question.
She said that the family has a shop at the front of their house inside their yard and Diana and Dwayne were standing next to their aunt by the counter.
Kaieteur News understands that a white car “came with full speed” and its driver apparently lost control of the vehicle.
After toppling over numerous times and swerving into the Romascindo’s yard, it slammed into the children, and then into a part of the house.
The children’s aunt said that she went to purchase a phone card at her brother’s shop when the incident took place.
She estimated that the car was travelling at a rate of “80 to 90 miles per hour”.
“It came from up the road and come straight into the light pole, splitting the pole in pieces and slam to the edge of the shop where we were standing, myself, Diana and Dwayne. I barely pull myself away, it happen so quick, I had no time to snatch Diana or Dwayne”, said the aunt.
According to the woman, the lights around the area went off immediately after the wires on the posts burst.
The distraught aunt continued to explain that a passenger in the car arrived at the hospital with a bleeding elbow while another passenger refused admission since “he was afraid”.
Kaieteur News understands that the driver quickly fled the scene and the police officials were not able to apprehend the suspect until the following day.
At the GPHC yesterday, both children were said to have suffered head injuries, and were crying out for pain.
Dwayne Ramascindo was placed on a liquid diet while his sister Diana is receiving saline treatment. The boy also sustained injuries to his feet also which are preventing him from walking while Diana is nursing a broken hand among other injuries.
The girl is also said to be in a delusional state and cannot even recognize her father when he visits her bedside.
The family is hoping that the two children have speedy recoveries and that the relevant authorities look into the matter.
One suggestion is that speed bumps be placed along the road in Hosororo since many vehicles are usually seen speeding in the area.
