A major catastrophe was averted when public spirited persons managed to extinguish a fire of unknown origin which had started in Stall 104-105, Section Two in the La Penitence Market around 3:30 hours on Sunday.
The owner of the stall who gave her name as Bhajmattie said that she was outside of the market attending to other business, when she heard persons shouting ‘fire!’ She said that because she was unable to run fast enough, she arrivedat the scene only to realize that it was her stall.
She said that she immediately gave persons, who were assisting, the keys to open the door in an effort to put out the fire before it
spread to the other stalls.
While they were at that, public-spirited persons called the Guyana Fire Service, which arrived almost immediately to put out the fire.
Bhajmattie stated that she could not say what may have caused the fire, since she has no electrical appliances or no illegal connections in her stall.
The woman said that when she left the stall around 17:00 hours on Saturday, everything was in order and there was nothing electrical that was left in her stall that could have caused a fire of that nature.
Representatives from the Fire Service indicated that a lighted candle may have caused the fire.
But the stallholder is denying this claiming that there is one candle that she has, which only burns once a year and that is on the eve of Christmas.
Bhajamittie said that the stall was built in 1992 and is used as a bond to pack her goods, since she has another stall at which she operates at the front of the market.
When Kaieteur news visited the stall everything was burnt to ashes.
The stallholder said that she does not know how she will restart her business, since she had recently stocked the stall with goods that she had credited.
When asked if she has any suspicion of anyone, she clearly stated that she does not want to blame anyone since she was not there to witness what had transpired.
