Ramadan greetings from AFC…
The Holy Month of Ramadan is a time when Muslims undergo much sacrifice, worship and introspection to transform their mind, body and soul. The month-long daily fasting from dawn to sundown is a personal commitment to take action to change themselves to be a better human, a better Muslim and a better citizen.
Ramadan was mandated by Prophet Muhammad to his followers as it was also the practice of religions before, so mankind may develop righteousness in order to ‘enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong’.
The third “pillar” or religious obligation of Islam, fasting has many special benefits. Among these, the most important is that it is a means of learning self-control. Due to the lack of preoccupation with the satisfaction of bodily appetites during the daylight hours of fasting, a measure of ascendancy is given to one’s spiritual nature, which becomes a means of coming closer to God. Ramadan is also a time of intensive worship, reading of the Qur’an, giving charity, purifying one’s behaviour, and doing good deeds.
At a time when pervasive wrongs have enveloped Guyana and many Guyanese are considering changes, Muslims will be affirming their pledge to change their ways so they can “achieve closeness to Allah.’
The AFC knows that the Muslim community has been very strong, united and committed to righteousness even in the midst of high crime, high taxes, rising unemployment, economic underdevelopment, massive corruption and a dysfunctional educational system which have all severely affected their communities.
This Ramadan must be an opportunity to make a personal commitment to change as the Quran states, “ALLAH does not change a people´s condition unless they change what is in their hearts….” [13:11].
The AFC wishes Muslims and all Guyanese a most blessed and rewarding Ramadan. May your prayers, sacrifices and fasting bring you, your family and Guyana peace, love and development.
