Edmond DeClou’s recent victory over Joel ‘Mr. Majestic’ McRae in the August edition of the ProAm boxing cards was touted as an eliminator for an imminent fight against Howard ‘Battersea Bomber’ Eastman for the latter fighter’s local middleweight crown.
However, it seems as though this bout may suffer a setback after Eastman suffered a crippling knockout loss to Trinidadian Kirt Sinnette at the Jean Pierre Sports Complex, Mucarapo, when the two faced off for the World Boxing Council (WBC) light/heavyweight title Saturday evening last.
Dubbed ‘The night of Champions,’ the card also witnessed Romanian Ionut ‘JoJo’ Dan stopping Trinidadian based Guyanese boxer, Iwan Azore in the 2nd round of a welterweight clash for the WBC CABOFE welterweight title.
Another Guyanese pugilist, lightweight Rudolph Fraser, also surrendered meekly, the victim of a first round knockout to Trinidadian Prince Lee.
According to reports out of the Twin Island Republic, Sinnette rebounded from a near two-year hiatus from the ring and defeated the Guyanese in what was undoubtedly the fight of the night.
Both fighters had the crowd on its feet as they traded punches for the duration of the bout. Sinnette looked anything but ring rusty, twice shaking his opponent with powerful left and combining right hand punches in the second round. The veteran Eastman pasted Sinnette to the ropes with several vicious salvoes but failed to complete the job.
The Trinidadian rebounded in the eight stanza with a big right that had a tiring Eastman wilting. The force of the blow also deposited Eastman’s mouth-guard into the crowd.
Shortly afterwards another combination sent Eastman to the canvas for the full count.
The reports out of Trinidad also seem to suggest that Azore may have got a raw deal after accepting a late fight after Dan’s original opponent, Floyd Trumpet sustained an injury during training sessions.
The report states that the Guyanese attempted to fend off a barrage of punches from the world fifth-ranked ‘Jo Jo’ Dan after being nailed to the ropes in the third round.
The report further stated that Azore enjoyed two excellent opening rounds in which hetraded punches with his counterpart. He was later subjected to a barrage of punches but appeared to be in a solidly defensive position against the ropes when the referee waved off the proceedings.
A large section of the audience, apparently disgruntled by the decision jeered and voiced the opinion that the referee should have allowed the fight to go on.
Azore subsequently vented his frustration by throwing himself to the ground. With tears trickling down his cheeks, the stocky Guyanese fighter explained that he was always in control and kept a high guard when the fight was prematurely halted.
