A large crowd flocked the Wakenaam Community Center Ground on Saturday night last to attend the much anticipated annual Wakenaam Night and Expo.
But most of the participants as well as patrons were disappointed when a heavy downpour curtailed the activity just when things were beginning to heat up.
The event, which is in its fourth year, commenced with brief messages from the Chairman of the Wakenaam Night Committee Sheik Ahmad and Labour Minister Manzoor Nadir, and this was followed by an entertaining stage show.
Ahamad in his brief message, first extended congratulatory greetings to his team and also his fellow Islanders who came out in their droves, despite the inclement weather, to be a part of Wakenaam Night, 2011.
He added that this year’s, event has seen 25 booths, an increase from the previous years.
Minister Nadir, who replaced, Minister of Tourism Manniram Persaud, noted that the Government is pleased to be supporting the annual Wakenaam Night.
Reflecting, Nadir stressed that the event has grown and the Government is closely working along with the Wakenaam Management Committee to see that it continues to grow.
The stage show saw tantalizing performances from Michelle ‘Big Red’ King; Shelly G; two-time Chutney Queen Fiona Singh; Bala, a local artiste from Wakenaam; Vikash Shadoe of Trinidad and Mahendra Ramkellawan.
But when the cultural performances were in full swing, a heavy downpour, accompanied by lightning and thunder, brought a sudden halt to the night’s celebration.
The Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company was one of the main sponsors of the Wakenaam Night, along with the Ministry of Tourism.
