Local motor racing fans will be in for a treat today judging from explosive performance of former Group 4 champion Mark Vieira, who obliterated the previous record for the South Dakota Circuit during qualifying sessions yesterday.
Vieira, who is returning to the track after a brief hiatus erased the old mark of 34.898 seconds, set by Andrew King after producing a blistering 34.361 seconds to sit on pole with King’s 34.400 good enough to start second on the grid, while reigning champion Kevin Jeffrey’s 34.409 and Paul Vieira 34.428 occupy the third and fourth spots on the grid.
Vieira speaking with the media shortly after smashing the lap record promised to go even faster, predicting a lower 33 seconds time should the weather be on the dry side today. The local speed ace has been widely touted to be the x-factor at the upcoming second leg of the Caribbean Series where reigning champion Jamaican David Summerbell Jnr enjoys a handy lead in the individual competition, while the race for the regional title is well and truly on.
He promised a special treat for the Guyanese fans and they are being advised to come out in their numbers to witness what could very well be the best local rivalry in years.
In Group 3, Trinidadian Ravi Singh, who returned a time of 36.413, sits on pole ahead of Danny Persaud 36.752 and Gavin Gayadin with 37.653 seconds.
In the super bike class Stephen Vieira tore up track with a time of 35.363, while Gregory Lopes will be alongside him thanks to a 35.407, while Maurice Menezes occupies third spot with 36. 361
Patrons are urged to use the highway entrance to the circuit after last evening’s airport mishap.
Tomorrow’s event will not be hampered by that event according to the Organisers.
The event begins at 8:30 with the lap of honour.
