Four more teams have made it into the round-of-16 as the round-of-32 in the inaugural GT&T FastBall knock-out football competition draws to an end, it was scheduled to be completed last evening at the Den Amstel Community Centre Ground.
On Friday evening, the GFC Ground was again set alight with some entertaining matches, Pele Gold dishing out a sound beating on Potaro Strikers as they failed to strike on the night losing 6-0.
Pele Gold, one of the favourite teams to lift the One Million dollars first prize come August 7 when the grand final will take place at the Providence Stadium, wasted no time in reigning in their opponents.
Captain Travis ‘Zorro’ Grant sent them ahead in the 2nd minute of the feature game and four minutes later, Stellon David doubled the advantage. Thereafter there was some amount of resistance from Potaro as they held up the scoring until the final minute of the first half when ‘King’ Solomon Austin scored with the blue ball to increase the advantage for Pele, 4-0.
Manasseh Primo took over the scoring in the second stanza of proceedings with goals in eth 18th and 20th minute to seal a big win for Pele 6-0 and a place in the final 16; they will play the winner of the Mocha Arcadia All Stars/Amelia’s Ward B game that was contested last evening at the Den Amstel Ground.
Western Tigers A roared on to the next stage as they ran past Cool Runnings of Linden 2-1 on penalty kicks following a keen regulation time tussle which ended 2-2.
Dwayne Ali, one of the leading scorers in the competition guided the Tigers into the lead in the 4th minute but that advantage was cancelled out in the penultimate minute of the first half when Cool Runnings not only equalized but took the lead compliments of the blue ball; Charles Harvey rocking the nets.
It was beginning to look like another upset on the tables as the minutes ticked away and the Tigers being unable to draw level but those fears were put to rest in the 25th minute when former Pele goalkeeper Shem Porter, now playing out, rocked the nets to pull his team level.
When regulation time expired, it was now down to penalty kicks to decide which team was advancing and the Tigers prevailed 2-1 to earn a round-of-16 date with East Coast team Ann’s Grove tomorrow evening at the GFC Ground.
Reggae Boyz also made it through when veteran and former national midfielder Shawn Bishop converted with the blue ball in the 13th minute to guide them past another Linden side, Adam’s Rockers 2-1 which had taken the lead in the 8th minute, Deon Gravesande the player on target.
The second half did not produce anymore goals earning Reggae Boyz the win and a date against Daddy’s Enterprise in the round-of-16 tomorrow at the GFC Ground.
Lethem’s further charge in the competition was brought to an abrupt end as they failed to put away a game Broad Street line up which prevailed 2-1 on penalty kicks, regulation time ended 0-0.
Broad Street will now face off with the winner of the Western Tigers B/West Demerara battle which was set for last evening at Den Amstel, in their round-of-16 clash tomorrow at GFC.
