With a lot of activities on this Emancipation day weekend the talk around is the much anticipated Port Mourant Turf Club Emancipation Horserace meet set for today at the famous Port Mourant Turf Club Corentyne Berbice.
Fireworks are expected as a number of the country’s top horses have entered for the grand one day calendar event. A number of new entries have been received over the past days taking the entries to over 70, which include a number of newly imported animals from Overseas in what is anticipated to be a top notch day of racing.
Over $4M dollars is at stake for the seven event meet which will include cash, trophies and other memorabilia’s including gate prizes. Beverage giants Banks DIH Limited and Telephone Giants Digicel lead the sponsorship team which also includes Sheriff Racing Stables and Innovative Construction among others.
The feature event for B class event is sponsored by Banks DIH Limited and has an encouraging first prize of $600,000 plus a trophy available for the winner in the 1500M event. The line up caters for most of the top runners in the division. Among those entered are Champtress, Night Crescendo, Zelik, Night Crescendo, Marathon Man, Miss Orientate, Gullium, Stormy Flame, Grand De Roja, Donut Prince, Wad a Luck, On the Rock with Salt, Mr. Gold Finger and the newly imported Tiger Prospect running out of the Elcock Stables. With no animal being the dominant horse over the past five meets anything can be expected as the field is wide open and another upset can be in the making. The distance should also suit all the runners.
The 3-yrs-old race is for horses bred and born in Guyana and the West Indies also over 1500M with a tantalizing $400,000 and trophy as it winning incentive. Better than Gold of the Kris Jagdeo stable has never lost a race since its entry into the racing circle and according to trainer Tribhuwan ‘Turbo’ Jagdeo, will definitely be looking to continue its unbeaten run, but is expected to face stiff challenge from, Face the Fire, Work Force, Gold Plated, Captain Cook, Northern Dancer, Celebration Love, and Technology.
Fans will be anxious to see the return of Sabrina Princes also of the Jagdeo stable; back after a long lay-off. The last time the animal raced it ran away with a $1M first prize in a feature event this time the animal will be competing in the E class showdown against the likes of Pinch The cash, Tropical Passion, Appealing Harvest, Fresh Prospect, Majestic and Top of the Line. The distance is 1500M with the winner collecting $300,000 and a trophy.
Times have Changed, Red cloud, Serenity, Watch my Shadow are among those expected to lead the charge in the Two year old race which is also for Guyana and West Indies bred horses over a distance of 1000M with the winner copping $300,000 and trophy.
Top of the Line and Royal Champion top the entries in the ‘G class category over event over 1200M but will have to compete against Stormy Lass, Megan’s Choice, Zelona, Maracas Star, Sir Balajie, Pixie Fire, Romantic Passion, Maya, Prado’s Gold and Five Star General for the winning money of $240,000and trophy.
There is $140,000 available for the winner of the ‘I’ and Lower event which covers a distance of 1200M. Extra Heat, Apostle, and Princess Renukha are among those in the reckoning.
There is a race for JKL horses also over 1200M with a winning purse of $120,000 and trophy among the entries so far are Cash connection, Infinity T.D junior and Pinky.
Outstanding individual performers including top Jockey, trainer and stable will be presented with accolades compliments of Ramesh Sunich of the Trophy Stall, Bourda Market.
