The intense rivalry witnessed between current national champion, Taffin Khan and his former equal counterpart Wendell Meusa will resume when the nation’s top chess players convene at the Kei-shars Sports Club, Camp and Hadfield Streets for the Emancipation Anniversary chess tournament, scheduled to get underway from 10:00hrs tomorrow morning.
This tournament is a FIDE rated affair and as usual the high standard of play witnessed in the past is expected to resume as, apart from Khan and Meusa, two FIDE rated players that have been involved in keen tussles before, players the likes of Shiv Nandalall, David Khan, Loris Nathoo and Ryan Singh, also FIDE rated players, will be hunting for acclaim, adding to the competitive spirit.
This tournament will see junior and senior players competing in one category in a move the Chess Federation sees as significant, to expose the younger but now sharper players to their senior counterparts. Recently, the junior players have distinguished themselves among their senior counterparts and much is expected from them now that they are competing among the big boys and they will feel assured that they could replicate this feat. The youngsters will have the added incentive of knowing that they will be under the microscope and they can leave this tournament with a FIDE rating depending on their respective performance. As such, players the likes of Anthony Drayton and junior champion, Ron Motilall will want to diligently apply themselves knowing that a lucrative rating is at stake.
The tournament consists of seven rounds, using the Swiss Format, while the time control of 90 minutes per player and an additional 30 seconds increment per move is applicable. The first two rounds will be contested on the opening day while rounds three and four would get underway on Monday August 1. The remaining three Rounds will be played on August 6 and 7. All participants are asked to walk with writing apparel as players would be required to record their moves.
Meanwhile, DDL marketing representative, Larry Wills, handed over the sponsorship package to GCF Tournament Director, Irshad Mohamed who accepted the gift and conveyed his heartfelt gratitude to his benefactors. Mr. Wills responded that his organization is extremely delighted to support the aims and objectives of officials of the Chess Federation.
The extended chivalry marks the fourth such gesture. The tournament is organized by the Guyana Chess Federation and is sponsored exclusively by DDL under its Topco Juices Brand.
