Court regular Vandell Dazzell, called Vandell Skeete, 24, of Bachelor Adventure East Coast Demerara was on Friday sentenced to five years in jail in his absence by Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court for Robbery under arms.
The court heard that Dazzell robbed Yao Roberts on Wednesday February 4, 2009 at Ekura Canje River.
The state case as presented by Inspector Satrohan Dayaram was that on the day in question Roberts, who also hails from the East Coast of Demerara, had just left his farm in the Canje River and was in his boat in the River.
The accused and others, armed with guns and other weapons, came up in another boat and held him up.
He was beaten and taken back to his farm where he was robbed of one 50 horsepower engine valued $500,000, one wooden boat valued $400,000, foodstuff valued $20,000, five bird cages valued $5,000, five cage birds valued $260,000 and one gold ring valued $20,000.
The accused was badly beaten and thrown in a lake as the perpetrators made good their escape. The matter was reported and the accused, along with Rovi Robinson, was arrested and charged.
Dazsell was granted bail in the High Court and appeared in the magistrate’s court on a few occasions, but stopped coming after a while.
The matter continued in his absence resulting in him being jailed on Friday. The matter is continuing against Robinson who has since been jailed in another matter.
