The Road Safety Council, Guyana Police Force Traffic Department, and the Ministry of Public Works and Communications yesterday joined forces to educate participants of the ‘Diamond Camp’ on the various aspects of road safety. The forum was hosted by Electra Foundation, a non-governmental organization. The venue was the Electra Foundation, Diamond Housing Scheme.
The camp has approximately 220 campers and it was emphasized that the information would be disseminated to ensure participants spread the message of proper road usage.
Sergeant Vigilance and Corporal Boyce attached to the Grove Police Station explained the hard facts about being passengers in public transportation and pedestrians on the roadways.
It was emphasized that passengers should desist from traveling in overloaded minibuses since this is dangerous and disadvantageous in event there is an accident. They stressed that whenever an overloaded minibus is involved in an accident insurance companies do not compensate the policy holders (minibus owners) and passengers are left to their detriment.
The police ranks said that the speeding of vehicles should not be tolerated. It was emphasized that whenever a driver is speeding passengers should voice their concerns and exit the vehicle if necessary.
In addition, a complaint should be lodge at the nearest police station where ranks could take necessary actions. However, passengers are asked to take a very vital step to appear in court as a witness so that the errant driver would be prosecuted.
Bicycle users need to be more cautious when utilizing the roadways. The ranks expressed concerns about the manner in which youths tow their friends recklessly.
Romona Doorgen, Road Safety Council, Coordinator, stressed the importance for the careful utilization of the roadways. She emphasized that even though there are rules governing road usage common sense is very important.
Pedestrians should face the oncoming traffic and make use of the road safety infrastructure that is in place to ensure road safety.
According to Nigel Erskine, Traffic/Road Safety Engineer of the Ministry of Public Works, there are several important features on the roadways including the pedestrian crossing, and traffic lights that ensure the safety of pedestrians.
He tasked participants to ensure they utilize these features as it would increase their safety on the roadways.
For instance, Erskine explained that the various signs on the traffic light have varying meanings for road users.
He added that the ‘red man’ means that pedestrians should stop and allow traffic to flow while the ‘green man’ means that it is safe for pedestrians to cross the road.
The Ministry spends millions of dollars on road safety infrastructure development and oftentimes whenever there is an accident these investments are damaged.
Erskine appealed to the participants to record the licence plate number of vehicles involved in the accidents and report it to the Ministry.
