In an interview with the media yesterday, Alpha President Odinga Lumumba told reporters at the Conference Centre, Turkeyen, that Alpha was beaten badly in their CONCACAF Champions League fixture and it’s not anything to be ashamed of since they tried their best.
Costa Rico attended the World Cup trice and in comparison to the game at the National Stadium “we are like four to five levels below them,” he said.
The caliber of this game was unexpected with Costa Rico being such an extremely powerful team as Alpha was defeated 8-NIL.
As it pertains to Guyana’s level in football internationally, “Guyana is far behind” he lamented.
“The football was a different level of football; we did not comprise the capacity to deal with the game, especially in the second half when Costa Rico brought on two Brazilian players. Ronson Williams saved about 40 goals, if not we would have been beaten 20-NIL” he stated.
Amateur football does not do well in the World Cup and Olympic Games and Lumumba noted that, “Guyana’s football cannot succeed unless it’s done professionally.” With professional football, “…athletes can be paid to work morning, noon and night as a regular job.” Lumumba stated that he has asked the GFF to allow him in accessing professional football in Guyana. “I am willing to finance and put together a professional beginning in Guyana,” he said.
