The Village of Maria’s Pleasure on Wakenaam Island was plunged into a state of mourning when five-year-old Levi Jairaj was pronounced dead after being fished out of a trench shortly after 17:30 hrs.
The child’s grandfather told this newspaper that he took his two grandsons to Bendorff to carry some cashew nuts for a relative.
After crossing the bridge leading into the yard he realized that only one of his grandsons was with him. The other grandson told his grandfather that his brother fell into the trench.
An alarm was raised and immediately relatives jumped into the trench and begun to search. The fact that the koker was open and the trench was deep made the search difficult.
A short time later the body of the child was found. He was rushed to the Wakenaam Cottage Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Levi was the last of four children born to Mr and Mrs Linus Jairaj. The child’s mother was at the time purchasing clothing for church while the father, who is a Pastor, was attending a religious crusade on the East Coast of Demerara.
The family currently resides at Lethem but had travelled to Wakenaam to holiday with their family.
