Under the theme “Commemorating our past, acknowledging our present and creating our future”, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport launched the celebrations of Guyana’s 173rd emancipation anniversary, yesterday.
Several African cultural groups were present at the launching which commenced with a “libation” by “Brother Andrew”.
The “libation” was one of the most important and sacred part of the ceremony.
Leader of the “libation”, “Brother Andrew”, along with the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony and a child, comprised the team.
The trio represented the theme for this year’s emancipation. Dr. Anthony stood as the past, “Brother Andrew” as the present and the child as the future.
During the “libation”, respect was paid to the African ancestors who have worked hard and who made significant contributions to the nation.
Dr. Anthony stated that Emancipation is “something beautiful to celebrate”. He highlighted Guyana’s rich and diverse culture while reflecting on its history.
The Minister stressed that citizens need to acknowledge emancipation despite race and beliefs because “we have a collective history”. He added that “we should be as one on occasions like these and treat everyone like our ancestors”.
Dr. Anthony also encouraged the audience to do whatever little they can to make Guyana a better place.
Also forming part of the programme were poems, dances, drumming and singing, all of the African culture.
