Managing Director of Ansa McAl Trading Ltd., Beverly Harper, was Thursday inducted as the Fourth Honorary Patron of Guyana’s most successful youth and sports club, the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club.
In a simple ceremony which took place at Ansa McAl Trading Ltd, 60 Beterverwagting ECD, Honorary Member of the club and former British Guiana, Guyana and West Indies cricketer Basil Butcher presented Ms. Harper with a certificate, while Office Manager of the club Moonish Singh, presented a sash to the new Patron.
Club Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster in remarks said that the position of Honorary Patron sees the individual serving as a role model to the club’s members and also as an advisor to any club member who may have strayed away.
“The Patron is also expected to assist the elected executive to maintain a positive public image of the club and attend major activities like the annual awards ceremony. We are confident that Ms. Harper would make us all proud with her performance and we look forward to working along with her during her first term of office, 2011 to 2016.
Together we would continue to make a positive difference in the lives of the youths, the less fortunate and elderly.”
Ms. Harper is taking over as Patron from Mrs. June Mendes who has decided to step aside due to health reasons.
Prior to Mrs. Mendes, the other patrons of the Club were Mr. Peter Ramsaroop and the late President Desmond Hoyte.
Foster noted that the rich legacy of the Club which was formed some 21 years ago by the St. Francis Community Developer with the aim of promoting sports as an alternative to a life on the road, continues despite the many challenges faced.
“The Club is now a household name in Guyana and further afield and continues to be unmatched by any other institution of similar nature in Guyana. We have touched and changed the lives of thousands of people and would continue to do so in the future.
The product that is the RHTY&SC has been successful because we have used a simple formula over and over – sheer hard work, honesty, Faith in the God we serve, dedication, team unity and a strong belief in the work we do. We have been blessed with a strong leadership team who leads by example.”
Ms. Harper in response said she was very humbled by the RHTY&SC’s invitation to become their 4th Patron pointing out that it was indeed a privilege to hold such a position at one of Guyana’s finest clubs.
She noted that despite the fact that Guyana’s cricket is perhaps at its lowest point ever, the RHTY&SC has been a shining example in serving and producing cricketers in Guyana. “I am honoured to be a part of this wonderful club.”
Ms. Harper also took the opportunity to extend sincere condolences to the relatives, family and the cricket fraternity on the passing of International cricket Umpire Clyde Rory Duncan who passed away in Trinidad on Tuesday.
Ms. Harper, an ardent cricket fan and supporter said that she was saddened by his passing pointing out that the late Duncan was a “True Guyanese Great”.
The Managing Director also took the opportunity to welcome Mr. Basil Butcher to Ansa Mc al and thanked the former right handed batsman who also bowled leg break for the his contribution to the sport.
She said that it was unfortunate that the expertise of former players the caliber of Butcher, who played 44 Test Matches for the West Indies at an average of 43.11 with 7 centuries, was not being utalised today.
