A new aviary for the Harpy Eagle at the Zoological Park is set to be constructed in approximately four months at a cost of $8,888,030 according to the National Parks Commission.
The facility will have a length of 100 feet and will be 60 feet wide and 40 feet high.
This development was made possible through an agreement with Odense Zoo of Denmark and the Guyana Zoo under a relationship designed to bring benefit to both facilities.
According to general manager of the National Parks Commission, Yolanda Vasconcellos, the design of the exhibit will facilitate trees in the vicinity of the proposed construction area being incorporated into the architecture, allowing for the aviary to carry the dimension and landscape features that are as near as possible to the natural habitat of the majestic Harpy Eagle.
She further stated that the exhibit will feature an elevated walkway around the cage for viewing of the eagles at the top of the trees and a natural waterway that flows through the cage.
Adding that within the cage there is a quarantine area, the General Manager said this will serve as a treatment area for the eagles or when there is need to perform maintenance on the main cage. The Harpy Eagle (Harpia harpyja) has disappeared almost entirely and has become one of the most critically endangered species in the world today, with its numbers declining sharply. As such, they are also good indicator species, representing the general health of the ecosystem in which they live.
As with other birds of prey, the Harpy Eagle sits at the top of the food chain.
