A three-week workshop – “Right Start Pan Minors Music Literacy” – conducted by Republic Bank (Guyana) Limited in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, concluded yesterday with a simple ceremony at the Grand Savannah Suite, Pegasus Hotel.
According to the organisers, the aim of the workshop which commenced on July 11 was to “positively shape the minds of youths, help them to realise their potential, improve skills and dream of responsibilities beyond their present circumstances and popular culture”,
As the programme helped Republic Bank to realise the vision of “making a difference”, the entity was pleased to have the response of 115 children from regions 4, 6 and 10.
Seventy-nine (79) students from groups in region 4 were presented with certificates at the ceremony. The remaining 36 from regions 6 and 10 will receive their certificates at a later date. The students were divided into Beginner and Intermediate classes.
Over the three-week period, the students were exposed to the history, theory and practical aspects of steel pan. They were well trained by eight experienced instructors.
Present at the ceremony were the Permanent Secretary (PS) of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, Alfred King; Director of Culture of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. James Rose, and members of the Board of Directors, along with staff of Republic Bank (Guyana) Limited.
PS King commended Republic Bank and all of the participants for their willingness to be involved in the programme. He also encouraged parents and guardians to continue to lend support to their children.
He highlighted a significant decline in the use of steel pan over the past three to five years in Guyana, and it was noted that in fact, that decline served as a spark to facilitate such a workshop.
King expressed hope that the successful programme would expand further next year, involving at least three more regions.
The participants from the various groups entertained the audience with some of the skills that they have acquired.
