Capture three of Guyana’s seven medals
Guyana’s amateur boxers displayed why they are the best bet for securing medals at the 2012 London Olympic Games when they finished among the medals won at the ALBA Games in neighbouring Venezuela this past week, claiming three of the seven won.
Imran Khan, Samuel Primo and Markember Pierre all captured bronze medals of the seven of which six were bronze and one silver. Stefan Gouveia, while not among the medals, was done in by what was reported as a controversial decision, which evoked the displeasure of those in attendance.
GABA President Steve Ninvalle was a satisfied man when Kaieteur Sport spoke to him. He informed that it was heartening to see Guyana’s young boxers finish among the medals, noting that a total 25 countries took part in the action including the mighty Cubans, well known for their impressive showing in the amateur boxing arena. Ninvalle, who said that he would have been satisfied if they had only won one medal, had a contented disposition as he spoke proudly of the young fighters.
He pointed out that the association just Wednesday evening launched their road to London programme and these boxers are part of the short list that have been preparing for selection to Guyana’s team for the Olympics. Ninvalle noted that boxing was one of the sports that were top of the list of seeing Guyana land another Olympic medal, a sentiment expressed by Permanent Secretary in the Sports Ministry Alfred King recently. The country’s lone medal at the Olympic Games was won in 1980 by boxer Michael Parris.
The GABA boss is hopeful of getting the corporate support to ensure proper preparation for the squad. This very commendable performance should galvanize business houses to support GABA whether on request or not.
Ninvalle congratulated the boxers, who he said gave of their best, and its now down to the technical team and the fighters to review their performances and improve to the next level for London next year.
