International Cricket Umpire Guyanese Clyde Rory Duncan died on Tuesday night in Trinidad where he was being treated for illness. He was 57.
In a time of falling standards and an increased influence from cricket politics, Duncan was among the real professionals in the local Umpiring fraternity and was always willing to offer assistance to his fellow Umpires, especially in his role as lecturer during classes leading up to Umpire’s exams.
Duncan, who hailed from Vreed-in-Hoop in West Demerara, never played any high level of cricket but made his Test debut as an Umpire in 1991 at Bourda when Australia played the West Indies but never stood in another Test since his second Test match in 1994 at Bourda which involved West Indies and England.
Duncan who was a member of the Guyana LOC during World Cup matches in the West Indies, Umpired the last of his 21 ODIs in Antigua last year during the South Africa home series and Nigel Duguid, who is now Guyana’s leading Umpire, said Duncan’s presence on the field when he made his Regional debut last year in the senior 50-over in Jamaica was invaluable to his success.
Duncan who also played an important role as an Administrator at the Guyana Cricket Umpires Association, Demerara Cricket Umpires Council and the Georgetown Scorers and Umpires Association, also lectured at the University of Guyana and the Government Technical Institute.
Yesterday, Norman Malcolm Assistant Secretary / Treasurer, of the West Indies Cricket Umpires Association said, “I have just learnt of the passing of Brother Duncan. My understanding is that he was in Trinidad receiving treatment at the time of his passing. May I crave your indulgence in offering all the necessary support to the family at this time. May his soul rest in peace and light perpetually shine upon him.”
Many Umpires in Guyana yesterday expressed shock at Duncan’s passing. As a member of the Guyana Cricket Umpires Council and someone who was personally helped by Duncan when I was writing my Umpires Exams, this writer would also like to express heartfelt condolences to Duncan’s family and friends and wish that his soul may rest in peace. Kaieteur Sport also extends condolences to him family at this time of bereavement.
Arrangements for his funeral will soon be announced.
