The Uitvlugt resident, who allegedly had in his possession an unlicenced firearm and ammunition, was yesterday remanded to prison until August 28. He denied the allegations.
When Linden Polis appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton he heard that on July 21 at Akaio Backdam, Cuyuni River, he had in his possession one .38 Taurus revolver and 28 live matching rounds of .38 ammunition without being the holder of a firearm Licence.
Polis, 46, of 100 Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara, was represented by Attorney at Law Vic Puran who made an unsuccessful application for bail stating that the articles were not found on his client’s person; rather they were found in the mining camp that was occupied by several other individuals. Puran also stated that his client is not a flight risk.
However, the Prosecution’s facts differed. The court was told that the defendant was the only occupant of the camp at the time the raid was conducted and that the firearm and ammunition were discovered.
The Prosecution then requested that the matter be heard at the Bartica Magistrates’ Court. The application was granted.
