Stakeholders including the British High Commission, Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) and the National Sports Commission (NSC) through the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, met yesterday at the Umana Yana to usher in 1 year before the commencement of the 2012 London Olympic Games.
In a circulated release, it was disclosed that International Olympic Committee (IOC) President, Jacques Rogge will address the world on the first official day of the Olympics on July 27, 2012, inviting the world’s best athletes to compete for supremacy in London.
“It is six years since the UK (United Kingdom) had first won the privilege to host the Games in Singapore, and it has been a remarkable journey since. Everything is on track. Construction of the major venues is complete, a year ahead of Games time.
We are on budget, on time and set to deliver a great summer of sport and culture,” the British High Commission release noted.
The British High Commission indicated that it will be a show to remember for the Olympics and personal triumphs.
It stated that the host country has been transformed to achieve the satisfaction of what is expected for such a major event as the Olympic Games.
“And they have achieved this with remarkable commitment to putting sustainability at heart of the build, making London the first truly ‘green’ Games in history,” the handout stated, adding it has transformed the lives of millions of young men and women.
At the domestic level, Director of Sport, Neil Kumar has ensured that Guyana will be fielding a strong contingent to the London Games. He said that Guyana is seriously interested in competing against the best in the world and is making the necessary investment.
