Bajans take thrilling 1st innings lead against Jamaica
The third round of the Regional Under-19 three Day Cricket Tournament continued yesterday at Bourda as the Windward Islands closed the second day on 340-8 in reply to the Leeward Islands’ 242 to take first innings points with a day left in the contest.
Skipper Kavem Hodge, who scored 317 runs in last year’s tournament in St Lucia with a highest score of 122 and an average of 52.83, lashed 18 fours from 238 balls in an entertaining unbeaten 155 and shared in a 147-run partnership with Sunil Ambris, who hit nine fours and a six in his 84, and was caught behind off Henry.
Earlier, Leewards Captain Rakheem Cornwall added 15 to his overnight 55 before he was LBW to Larry Edwards after his team resumed the day on 158-6.
Wasim Mintos (47) was then caught by Terron Simons to leave the score on 217-8. Damion Parris (9) and Raymel Adams (10) were removed by Simons to end the innings. Edwards finished with 5-68 and Simons supported with 4-51.
When Windward Islands began their reply Awen Edwards and Emanuel Peters tried to make hay while the sun shone but fast bowler Nino Henry rained on their parade by dismissing Edwards for a duck and Peters for 14 to leave the Windwards in early trouble .
Dwight Thomas (7) and Larry Edwards (7) were dismissed by Larry Audaim and Shaquille Martina respectively before Simons scored 26 and was LBW by Cornwall at 323-8.
Hodge and Preston McSween (1*) saw their team to the close without further loss and will continue today when play resumes at 09:30hrs.
Meanwhile, at Enmore Barbados were five without loss off five overs in their second innings – an overall lead of 11 against Jamaica – at the close of play on the second day of their match yesterday.
The not out batsmen were Captain Kraigg Brathwaite (3) and Shane Parris (2) after the Barbadians grabbed a thrilling six-run first innings lead 95 minutes after tea.
Starting the day on one without loss, Jamaica were bowled out for 171 off 89.4 overs in reply to Barbados’ first innings total of 177 all out in 95.4 overs.
Brathwaite was the leading wicket-taker with 4-33 while fellow off-spinner Chaim Holder took 3-43 and Medium-pacer Justin Greaves 2-29.
Bryan Gayle (18) was leg before to Greaves as he pushed forward at 39-1, his opening partner John Campbell was bowled by Brathwaite for 29 at 54-2 and Ramon Senior (8) was caught at forward short-leg off Holder at 64-3.
Chrishna Graham (16) fell to Brathwaite at 74-4 while Teswayne Creary, essaying a drive, was caught at slip off Brathwaite for 14 at 93-5. Aldaine Thomas fell to Holder for nine, Fabian Allen was caught at slip off leg-spinner Amir Thomas for ten, Ragni Francis was caught at extra-cover off Greaves for 27, Captain Donovan Nelson was bowled by Brathwaite as he prodded forward for 26 and Marquini Mindley was bowled off stump by Holder for four to end the innings.
