Guyana three-member swim team attending the 14th FINA World Championships taking place in Shanghai (July 16 – 31) has been gaining valuable experience competing against the best in the world.
Niall Roberts, Jessica Stephenson and Britany van Lange are Guyana’s representatives at the Meet which comprises competitions in all of the disciplines which fall under the auspices of FINA – Open-Water swimming, Diving, Synchronised Swimming, Water Polo and Swimming.
As none of the local swimmers attained the qualifying times for this highest level of swimming competition which started on the 24th, they were allowed to swim two (2) events each.
Jessica Stephenson, Guyana’s sole Carifta gold medalist, swam first in the 100m Breaststroke on July 25th. She was seeded in the second of seven heats, in lane 7, with an entry time of 1:15.57. Unfortunately, having been ill a few days before, she was not able to attain a personal best time, finishing in 1:15.64.
The next day (July 26th) was Britany van Lange’s turn and her first event was the 200m Freestyle in which she was seeded in lane 8 in the second of seven heats, with a time of 2:15.88. Although she swam the first 100m of her event well, Britany faded in the second half of the race, ending in a time of 2:16.40.
On day 4 of the competition, Niall Roberts was entered in the 100m Freestyle, with a time of 55.52 which seeded him in lane 1 in the fifth of fourteen heats. Niall was the first Guyanese to attain a personal best, finishing in time of 54.99, placing 4th in his heat and 74th overall (of a total of 106 swimmers).
Last evening, van Lange was expected to swim her second event, the 100m Freestyle, followed by Stephenson in the 200m Breaststroke.
Roberts will finish off the Meet for Guyana today, swimming the 50m Freestyle.
While in Shanghai, the team benefited from extensive testing (swimming power tests, stroke analysis and biomechanics); the results of which will provide a guide for them and their coaches to further improvements in the future.
