On a slow turner at Everest, the spinners captured 19 of the 22 wickets to tumble yesterday on an action-packed second day of the third round Regional under-19 three-day cricket contest between Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago.
By the close of the bowler dominated day, Guyana hunting 153 to win after giving up a valuable 88-run first innings lead, were 6-1, still 147 away from victory with nine wickets in hand.
Of all the teams in this competition, the spin-based attack of Guyana and T&T are most suited for the pitches here but yesterday’s embarrassing batting display by both teams had little to do with the surface and more to do with the inability of most of the Region’s batsmen at all levels, to properly play spin bowling for extended periods.
T&T resumed on 166-9 and their last pair of Steven Sooklall (36) and Jovan Ali (6*) extended their partnership to 44 before Sooklall was finally caught behind off pacer Ronsford Beaton 64 minutes into the day’s play as the visitors fell for 191.
West Indies leg-spinner Amir Khan finished with 6-50, while left-arm spinner Anthony Adams supported with 2-36.
Guyana, were bundled out for 103 as only Chanderpaul Hemraj (49) and opener Kevin Boodie (19) reached double figures as left-arm spinner Derone Davis captured 4-30 and was backed up by off-spinner Idress Mohamed (2-25) and Akeal Hosein (2-3).
Adams grabbed (5-16) his first five-wicket haul at this level in his second year and got support from fellow left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie (3-0) as T&T whose lowest total at this level was 62 against Jamaica at Sabina Park in 1982, crashed to 64 all out 35 minutes before the 17:30hrs close.
Boodie then seemed very unfortunate to be given LBW for a duck to Davis at 1-1 as T&T despite the new rule of giving 0.1 of a point for each wicket taken by a pacer, opened the bowling with Davis, who now has 17 wickets and Mohamed, the nephew of former T&T under-19 left-arm spinner and International commentator Fazeer Mohamed.
After the T&T last wicket stand had frustrated the Guyanese, Boodie one of the most accomplished and unlucky batsmen in this year’s tournament was run out for 19 which included three fours as he backed up too far and a straight drive from Kandasammy Surjnarine touched the bowler’s hand on its way onto the stumps.
Three runs later Surjnarine (5) was leg before to the 18-year-old Davis, who quickly removed Dominique Rikhi (7) to leave Guyana on 39-3.
Davis who plays for Clarke Road in Trinidad’s cricket, trapped fellow West Indies under-19 player Kwame Crosse (5) leg before wicket, while Mohamed had Jamal LaFleur (3) caught at short mid-wicket and at 51-5, Guyana, without a title since 2007, were wobbling on the ropes.
Davis got rid of Adams (2) at 57-6 before Clinton Pestano (4) injudiciously lofted Mohamed to long-off as Guyana slumped to 70-8.
Hemraj, who made a fluent 88 in the opening round, again looked good and along with the level-headed Khan who faced 42 balls and batted for 40 minutes for his two runs, added 31 for the ninth wicket before Hosein removed Khan at 101 and had Hemraj, who struck five fours in his 105-ball innings, two runs later.
Beaton, one of two First-Class players in the Guyana side ,then fell for a duck as his team were all out 88 runs behind the tourist, who last won the title in 2005 in St Vincent.
If Guyana’s shot selection was bad, T&Ts were even worse and once Beaton trapped Duane Cockburn leg before for seven at 18-1, wickets tumbled like nine pins as Savion Lara (5) and Hosein, the tournament’s leading run scorer coming into this round, was caught behind for two as Adams struck twice with the score on 23.
West Indies under-19 player Kieron Joseph battled for 52 balls for his eight before he was removed by Motie and although Mohamed showed some fight in his unbeaten seven from 31 balls, the Motie wrapped up the tail to bring his team back into the fray.
Davis’ early removal of Boodie has left Surajnarine (6*) and bight watchman Khan (0*) to try and build a partnership today when the game starts at 09:30hrs and with the pitch expected to further favour the spinners, T&T start the final day with the advantage in a match that both teams can win today.
