The founder of Guyana Bird Society, who was charged with assault, was yesterday placed on $40,000 bail after he pleaded not guilty.
Gajendra Narine appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court for unlawfully assaulting Orlando Nandkumar causing him grievous bodily harm on July 9 in Light Street, Alberttown.
Police Prosecutor, Venetta Pindar, informed the court that the defendant and the complainant are neighbours. On the day of the incident they had an argument, which resulted in the defendant picking up a piece of wood and lashing Nandkumar several times, she said.
The complainant received injuries and was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital. The matter was reported to the Alberttown Police station and the defendant was arrested.
The Prosecution objected to bail.
Narine, who resides at Lot 290 Thomas Street, South Cummingsburg, was represented by Attorney at Law, Gino Persaud, who made a successful application for bail in a reasonable sum. Persaud stated that on the day the incident occurred the complainant was intoxicated and called his client out of his home to fight.
He also stated that the two have a history of bad blood for over 10 years.
Narine is expected to make his next court appearance on August 2.
