A 54-year-old Enmore man is expected to appear before an East Coast Demerara Magistrate to answer to a rape charge, stemming from his alleged sexual intercourse with his 12-year-old mentally challenged female neighbour.
The man was arrested on Wednesday afternoon when he was caught literally with his pants down at his home in Hope West, Enmore. The child was also half-naked when the police arrived at the scene.
Yesterday police escorted the child to be medically examined but this newspaper was unable to ascertain the results of that examination.
According to a source, all the necessary statements relating to the matter have been taken.
A male relative of the victim told Kaieteur News yesterday that the family had only moved to the Enmore area about a month ago. He said he was at home with the 12-year-old girl and two other small children, when the neighbour made enquiries about the victim.
The relative said that he did not find it strange when the man asked him how old the child was and what was his relationship to her. Minutes later he missed the girl and assumed that she was in the toilet.
But as time went by and the girl did not respond to his calls, he became worried and went over to another neighbour to inform of the missing girl. Kaieteur News understands that the other neighbour, who was familiar with the suspect’s ways, immediately became suspicious and began making efforts to contact the police.
The relative told this newspaper that it was only when the police arrived and he saw the half-naked child emerging from the man’s house that he realized what had transpired.
When questioned, she told police that the man had pulled down her underwear and had placed his penis into her and was “humping up and down”.
“He was naked when the police arrived,” a resident of the community told Kaieteur News.
