Leonora Conquerors defeated Den Amstel Challengers by 8 wickets when play in West Demerara Police cricket tournament continued at the Cornelia Ida Community Center Ground on July 18 last.
Den Amstel batted first and compiled a total of 56 losing 7 wickets in the process. Leonora then lashed off the required total (62) while conceding just 2 wickets. Den Amstel Challengers then returned later in the day to defeat Parika Warriors by 4 wickets after the former team had amassed 52-6 in their innings. The winners then returned to dismiss the losing team for 51-6.
G. Narine took 7- 94 and was later adjudged man of the tournament, while the man of the match award went to S. Ramsundar who contributed 37 runs for the winning team.
In the semifinal matches Leonora Conquerors defeated Vreed en Hoop All Stars by 8 wickets after the latter team batted first and amassed 67-2. In reply, Vreed en Hoop All Stars fell short, scoring 62-2 when their innings expired.
There was also a female 5/5 exhibition affair where Rising Stars scored 130 runs and then restricted Glen warriors to 64-6. The tournament was organized to commemorate the 172nd anniversary celebrations of the Guyana Police Force. Eight teams comprising those from the Guyana Police Force and others from among the society battled for honours while there was one female exhibition match.
Spectators were given an opportunity to interact with the players and won cash, cell phones and other prizes. Assistant Superintendent, W De Hart performed the duties of M C while the Salinger’s family sound system provided the accompaniment of music.
The teams that participated were Leonora conquerors, Parika Warriors, Den Amstel Challengers, Vreed en Hoop All Stars, La Grange United, Wales Tigers, CID Falcons and Traffic Warriors. The two female teams are Rising Stars and Glen Eagles.
