In Wellington Street, between Charlotte Street and South Road, there is an almost unmanageable heap of garbage piled up on a daily basis. This, according to residents of the mid-city area, would often result from the numerous persons from “all over” disposing of their refuse at the location.
The smelly heap attracts mosquitoes, flies and cockroaches which affect those who dwell in proximity as well as passers-by.
Several persons have complained to this publication about the disgusting situation.
One man who requested anonymity said that the spot is “only partially cleaned every morning”.
“Dem garbage collectors does only pick up wha’ dey wan pick up. People does dump all kinda stink thing in de area and dem garbage collectors does lef it right deh.”
The man indicated that one of the two bins is broken and highlighted that as one of the reasons for the scattered garbage.
“Sometimes de garbage does deh all in de middle ah de road and dis thing does look bad ’cause everyday it does get heavy traffic through here,” the man stated.
One source said that he is aware that someone had contacted the Mayor and City Council concerning the situation, but is not sure what the response was.
When contacted, Mayor Hamilton Green explained that he had made repeated complaints to the government concerning the wanton dumping of garbage alongside roadways. These complaints, he said, appear to have been exercises in futility.
The Mayor asserted that the decrease in garbage collecting is a major contributing factor. He added that there are a lot of “indisciplined individuals in our society” who choose to dispose of their garbage at the roadside. “Even businessmen travel with their garbage just to dump it at that (Wellington Street) site,” Greene stated.
