Shai keep Bajan hopes alive with unbeaten 84 against Jamaica
The third round of the Regional Under-19 three-Day Cricket Tournament started yesterday with three matches and at Bourda the Leeward Islands were 158-6 against defending champions Windward Islands after play was delayed until 14:00hrs due to the early morning showers.
The toss was won by the Leeward Islands and they decided to bat first and were led by an unbeaten half century from their burly Skipper Rakheem Cornwall who made an undefeated 55.
Elijah Peters (30) and Duane Webb added 21 for the first wicket before Preston McSween dismissed Webb for eight. Shaquille Martina hit three boundaries in his 21 before he fell to Larry Edwards who finished with 4-41. Terron Simon dismissed Peters at 89-3.
Larry Audrain was leg before to Edwards for a duck. Henry (6) and Akeem Saunders (25) were also dismissed by the impressive Edwards but Cornwall, who has already played for the Leewards’ senior team in the last Caribbean Cup t20 tournament remained to the close. With him was Wasim Mintos (2*) and they will hope to build a big partnership when play continues on the second day today at 9:30hrs.
Meanwhile, at Enmore, Jamaica were one without loss off two overs in reply to Barbados’ first innings total of 177 all out off 95.4 overs at the close of play on the opening day of their third round WICB Under-19 three-day championship match after Shai Hope top-scored with an unbeaten 84 to help rescue Barbados from 60-6.
Hope, who batted at number three, batted for 269 minutes, faced 285 balls and struck three boundaries. He reached his half-century in 219 minutes off 196 balls with two boundaries.
Captain Kraigg Brathwaite, the competition’s only Test player, was caught by wicketkeeper Aldaine Thomas off pacer Marquino Mindley for two as he pushed forward at 2-1, while his opening partner Shane Parris was leg before to Mindley for eight at 11-2.
Anthony Alleyne, one of the most accomplished batsmen in the tournament, was run out for eight at 3-3 before Kyle Mayers was caught off Captain Donovan Nelson for 17 AT 56-4.
When Neil Browne (0) was bowled by Nelson and Justin Greaves (31) was caught at the wicket off left-arm spinner Fabian Allen for 31, Barbados were struggling on 117-6.
Mario Rampersaud was leg before wicket by Nelson for 14 at 158-7, while Chaim Holder was leg before wicket by John Campbell for one five runs later and Jerome Jones was leg before wicket by Nelson for a duck at 166-9. When Amir Thomas was run out without scoring Hope was left high and dry on 84.
Greaves struck three fours in his 67-ball innings and added 57 with Hope as Nelson took 4-38 with his leg-spin. Mindley supported with 2-32 after play started an hour late because of a wet field.
