Dear Editor,
There is misreading, there is misinterpretation, and then — enthroned in the most exalted place of the trinity — there is Bisram. I am not trying for dramatic effect here; I simply know no word properly descriptive of what he does. I doubt that one exists. Misconstrue? Too mild. Misrepresent? Too innocent.
Mischief makes a case for itself but in the end is defeated by its aura of schoolboyishness, which suggests nothing more sinister than the forgivable antics of a high-spirited rogue.
I realize that my having the temerity to offer advice to Bisram is redolent of an acolyte suggesting to a high priest that he clarify the many contorted, confounding, and downright complicated rites he has come to love after many years spent practicing them. But I’ll risk excommunication anyway.
My dear Bisram, once you have made up your mind to tell a lie, it is best to go at the thing full-bloodedly. Offer no quarter; take none.
Think Sitting Bull at the battle of Little Big Horn. Or standing bull, if you prefer. Or any other kind of bull you might be comfortable with.
Don’t say that in a retort to you Nigel Rogers “kind of excuse rape” (excuses rape might have been the better choice here). State, without qualification, that he excuses rape. Dispense with the “kind of.” It weakens the assertion you are trying for, to the point where you may risk losing a few of those souls who still stop their ears to the siren song of plain sense and give credence to your ramblings.
I must thank you for including the date of publication of the letter in which you claim this transgression is contained.
The interested may go into the archives of this newspaper, read the contents of that letter, and compare them with your pseudo-assertions.
However, fair warning should be issued: such an undertaking is not without substantial risk. The chasm that sprawls between what I said and what Bisram claims I said may induce vertigo.
Nigel Rogers
