The ruling People’s Progressive Party has distanced itself from embattled Queens, New York businessman Ed Ahmad, making it absolutely clear that Ahmad has not made any financial contributions to the party’s 2011 political campaign.
In a statement condemning the reporting by certain sections of the media of Ahmad’s arrest by Federal Agents in the United States of America, the PPP said that in no way can the businessman be considered a part of the PPP structure or the PPP/C Government.
The PPP was specifically referring to an article carried on the Demerara Waves website under the caption “PPP associate ensnared in New York straw mortgage deals; being electronically monitored”.
According to the PPP, the article portrays Ed Ahmad as a financier and operative of the PPP, adding that similar suggestions were also made by the ‘anti-PPP’ publications Kaieteur News and Stabroek News.
The party said that it has once again noticed that the Demerara Waves website has “openly joined ranks with the pro-opposition media in their continuing onslaught against the PPP and PPP/C Government by spreading falsehoods and misinformation.”
“The nasty attempts to link Ahmad’s activities with the PPP or to suggest that he is a financier of the PPP are nothing but absolute lies.”
Ahmad recently opened a place called Building Materials and Appliances Depot located at Industrial Site, Ruimveldt, just in front of the publishing house of the ruling party’s newspaper, the Mirror.
He is also said to be a close friend of leading members of the PPP regime.
But the PPP statement said that while the party can excuse the Kaieteur News, whose editor Adam Harris is the former Editor of the now defunct PNC’s New Nation (and the Guyana Chronicle) and the Stabroek News, which has clearly made its anti-PPP/C credentials known; the attempts by the Demerara Waves to portray itself as balanced has been dislodged by this latest piece of mischievous reporting.
The party called on all to note that Kaieteur News and Stabroek News have now officially enlisted the Demerara Waves into their pro-opposition media fold.
It pointed to this weekend’s “overwhelming pro-opposition coverage of the PNC now APNU activities” by Demerara Waves, claiming that this confirmed the news agency’s bias and lack of objectivity.
This is in direct conflict with opposition parties who claimed that the ruling PPP has been using the state owned media in an unprofessional manner.
