The rush for spots in the round-of-16 of the inaugural GT&T FastBall knock-out football tournament commenced in earnest on Sunday evening with round-of-32 matches before a large crowd at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground in the Bauxite Mining Town of Linden.
Unfortunately, four of the eight teams on show were sent packing; Linden emerging with a clean slate in their battle over Georgetown teams, while Grove maintained their dominance over Linden with yet another victory.
In victory lane on the night were Pioneer of Linden which brought the fairy tale run of the GFC Masters to a screeching halt with their 4-0 win; Bakewell Topp XX easily disposed of another City side, Warmongers 3-0; Amelia’s Ward A sent Customs crashing out of the competition triumphing 3-1, while in the opening game, Grove halted the run of Linden’s Trainline 1-0.
Pioneer were led by the veteran ‘John’ Wayne Milo who netted with the blueball in the 13th minute of a game that the Masters looked out of touch.
They did, to their credit enjoyed a few good moments when they held possession of the ball but that apart, Pioneer were always in control and should have converted at least six more goals.
Lindy Johnson had opened the scoring for Pioneer in the first minute of the game with Gregory Kersellous closing off the GFC Masters with his 26th minute goal.
Topp XX, without the services of the inspiration Collie ‘Hitman’ Hercules who has gone in search of greener pastures overseas, looked solid in disposing Warmongers who never looked like they were in a mood to war as they lost the battle 3-0.
Keon Sears was on target in the 1st and 4th minute with Captain Jamie Wilson sealing the deal from as early as the 5th minute. Many more chances were created by the Bakewell boys but they all went by the wayside, nonetheless they sealed a place in the round-of-16.
Amelia’s Ward A, whilst dominating Customs for almost the entire opening 10 minutes still found themselves trailing following a rear excellent buildup by the Customs unit.
Kurt Pollard received the ball just in the opposition half made some ground before unleashing a curling pass that saw Lionel Grimes finishing clinically in the 10th minute.
The fact that they were the dominant of the two teams and allowed the opposition to sneak ahead, the Ward boys regrouped for the second half of play which saw customs looking a mere shadow of the first half performance.
Amelia’s Ward improved on their effectiveness in the final third which saw them banging the nets on three occasions to seal a well crafted win. Matthew White netted in the first minute after play resumed, while Ezera Green sealed the deal with the blue ball with two minutes to game time.
FastBall is noted for its multiplicity of goals during matches but the Grove/Trainline match-up while producing just one goal, provided the ideal platform for the start of the round-of-32. It was an exciting, close and intriguing clash. Grove, one of two teams representing the East Bank showed that they were not going to be intimidated by the vociferous home crowd and went about their task of victory in businesslike manner.
Domini Garnett tucked in the lone and winning goal in the 8th minute of the opening half, neither side being able to hit the network for the remainder of the game. Grove did an excellent job in holding the ball which would have minimized Trainline’s chances of scoring, something for other teams to learn from.
Four more teams will move forward, while a similar amount will exit the tournament when round-of-32 action continues tomorrow, this time, the BV Ground of the East Coast of Demerara will take centre stage.
Ann’s Grove United open play at 18:00hrs against West Berbice’ Monedderlust this will be followed by a match-up between another Berbice side Cougars Retrievers against Daddy’s Enterprise of East Coast, Port Kaituma United will then throw down the gauntlet to Golden Stars B with the main event of the evening bringing together Berbice’s Hearts of Oak and home team BV Triumph United A.
