Junior chess players continue to demonstrate acute improvement in the sport and Carlos Petterson, a former student of Dolphin Secondary School, emerged victorious when the Banks Malta one-day Rapid Chess tournament concluded at the West Demerara Secondary School, Pouderoyen Sunday evening last.
Despite missing a few tournaments over the past months, Petterson retained a rich vein of form to amass 7 ½ points from a possible nine. For his efforts, the lad received a beautiful trophy, a tournament size chess set and a Banks Malta traveling bag.
Tevon Blaize of Charlestown Secondary suffered two losses and eventually scored 6 ½ points to capture the second prize which also included a trophy, a tournament size chess set and a Banks Malta traveling bag. Senior player, Abdool Karamat closed off the podium spots while student of the West Demerara Secondary School, Ganesh Persaud, copped the fourth prize.
More than one dozen chess sets were presented to various players by Banks Malta Brand Manager Clayton McKenzie shortly after activities concluded. Executives of the Guyana Chess Federation were grateful for the sets and opined that they will enhance their objective of promoting the sport. The tournament saw the participation of chess players mainly from West Demerara and a few players from Georgetown.
Delivering closing remarks, Banks DIH Communications Manager, Troy Peters reiterated his company’s support for the sport even as he noted the rapid development of the experienced by the players. Mr. Peters noted that this variable is a positive sign of their advancement and development in chess.
He feels that this is an indication of the strenuous efforts of the executives of the Chess Federation and urged them to continue in the same vein.
