The August holidays are here and school is out for an extended period. It is around this time that those children with no constructive activity, tend to meander to idle and other vocations. It is for this reason that national football coach Sampson Gilbert continues to work assiduously to ensure that the nation’s youths remain productively engaged even as they enjoy the prolonged August holidays.
Mr. Gilbert has organized a youth football coaching clinic for aspiring footballers between 6-17 years at the Conquerors Football Club, Tucville and activities got underway yesterday morning and continue on a daily basis up until August 12.
When Kaieteur Sport visited the venue yesterday morning, more than 25 aspiring footballers were undergoing sessions under the tutelage of Mr. Gilbert. They commenced with stretching and other warm up exercises even as Mr. Gilbert emphasized the importance of such activities. He told the youngsters that stretching was extremely important since such activity prepared the footballer for the rigorous requirements of the sport. Thereafter, the youngsters engaged in technical skills that involved coordination and muscle strengthening exercises.
Gilbert, who had piloted the national U-17 footballers to international success in Suriname a few years ago, explained that the idea was hatched some 5 years ago after he realized that many youngsters were eager to learn the sport. He said that the current players are drawn from the many clubs in the city with the majority emanating from the Tucville area.
To date, 75 persons have registered and Mr. Gilbert said that he anticipates an increase to somewhere around 100 players. He further pointed out that the programme is a broad based one, at the end of which, participants would be more aware of the intricacies of the sport in several areas. Some of these areas include discipline, social behaviours and interaction among others. The youngsters would also receive certificates of participation.
“The general objective is to foster a new thinking about football and to appreciate that the sport could enhance the effective socialization process,” exhorted Mr. Gilbert. He further explained that the start-up funding was garnered from his pockets but as the years progressed several corporate entities recognized the viability of the project and decided to render corporate assistance. These included Oasis Water, which has been on board from inception, Digicel, Pearl’s Bakery and Nigel’s Supermarket among others.
Quizzed on the benefits derived by him from the activity Mr. Gilbert proclaimed, “The youths need assistance to regulate their lives and if I could have an input in such aspirations my life would be meaningful and worthy of living.”
Activities continue this morning at the same venue.
