As the Guyana National Women’s hockey team enters their final week of preparation for the Pan American challenge in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, they received a welcomed boost from co-sponsor Dixie Lee Fast Food. With the franchise already established in Charity and having plans to launch in Georgetown in the near future, this was a welcome opportunity to show their support for the local athletes.
Dixie Lee is one of two uniform co-sponsors of the women’s national hockey team and presented branded uniforms to them to be used during the competition.
The PAHF Challenge is scheduled to begin July 31 and run until August 7, 2011.
Holders of the Dixie Lee franchise, Pomeroon Food and Beverage Inc., are no strangers to hockey, having also co-sponsored the team’s 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games appearance.
Operations Manager, Mr. Leonard Faerber expressed his company’s commitment to the team’s effort and wished them success. Vice-president of the Guyana Hockey Board (GHB) and team manager, Rawl Davson, accepted the contribution on behalf of the GHB and the team and thanked the company for its continued support.
The team faces Paraguay in their opening match on July 31 which will be a difficult match for the Guyanese since it usually takes them some time to get reacquainted with the unique performance of the artificial pitch.
According to Manager Davson, the first 20 minutes of that opening match will make all the difference to the team’s performance which is likely to improve thereafter.
The two teams making the finals of the PAHF Challenge in Rio will join the Pan American Federation’s top 6 teams in the 2013 World Cup Qualifier. The teams that have already qualified for the 2013 competition are Argentina, USA, Canada, Chile, Trinidad and Mexico.
The locals are scheduled to depart on July 28th by bus to Suriname, but will not arrive in Rio until the following day.
