The much anticipated explosion between tournament leaders Jamaica and host Guyana in the second round of this year’s regional under-19 three cricket tournament fizzled out like a damp squib at Bourda as the rain-ruined contest ended in a no-result.
When rain stopped play eight minutes before lunch Jamaica were 86-5 after electing to bat first on a slow track and heavy outfield after the first two days were completely washed out.
Jamaica, who beat Trinidad and Tobago in the first round, quickly lost Oshane Walters for a duck when he edged a tentative push at pacer Clinton Pestano with just four runs on the board.
The dangerous John Campbell who scored three tons for the West Indies under-19s against the USA youth side in Florida earlier this month, inside-edged his West Indies team mate Ronsford Beaton to the final leg boundary before smashing him disdainfully off the front foot to the cover boundary next ball to bring the small gathering to their feet in overcast conditions.
But Pestano struck an important blow when the left-handed Campbell failed to control a pull and lobbed a catch to short mid-wicket after making 16 from 12 balls.
Brian Gayle, who is not related to his more famous countryman Chris Gayle, joined Ramon Senior at 20-2 and the pair took Jamaica, without a title since winning on home soil in 2009, to 51 before West Indies under-19 leg-spinner Amir Khan trapped Gayle (15) leg before.
Chrishan Graham (7) was then bowled by left-arm spinner Anthony Adams at 60-4 before Senior (20) was stumped off Khan two runs later.
Teswayne Creary, the younger brother of former West Indies under-19 batsman Andre Creary looked accomplished in his unbeaten 17, while Aldan Thomas was unbeaten on five when rain ended the first session prematurely.
Pestano finished with 2-5 and Khan 2-26 for the Guyanese whose last title was in 2007 in St Kitts.
Although the sun came out in all its glory just after lunch, the absence of the water hog, which suffered mechanical problems, and a wet outfield which was deemed too dangerous to facilitate play, forced to Umpires to call off the game at 14:22hrs after an inspection which involved the two captains and Mangers.
Both teams got four points from the no-result but Guyana took 0.2 of a point to move to 16.5 points in the competition because a fast bowler took two of the five wickets to fall yesterday.
Guyana’s next match is against Trinidad and Tobago at Everest, while the Jamaicans face Barbados at the Police Sports Club ground from tomorrow.
Meanwhile, Barbados, who beat defending champions Windward Islands in their opening match also settled for a no-result against the Leewards at DCC after only play in the first session on the final day was possible.
Leeward Islands were 39-2 when rain stopped play just before Lunch and their next match is against the Windwards from tomorrow at Bourda.
