DCC ‘A’ takes GCA BrainStreet U-15 title

On a day in which there was no play after Lunch at the DCC and GCC grounds in the Regional under-19 series, the GYO ground, in the same vicinity, was alive with activity yesterday in the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) BrainStreet under-15 cricket final.
DCC ‘A’ who successfully defended the league title they won last year to qualify for the Cup semi-finals, defeated Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) by six wickets yesterday as an unfinished 77-run partnership between Khemraj Rupee and Cletus Johnson led them to 132-4 in 35.1 overs replying to MSC’s 129 all out in 29.2 overs.
Rupee, a national under-15 left-hander, stroked 47 not out with two fours and two sixes while Johnson, who hit national under-15 leg-spinner Steven Sankar for a six to finish the match, hammered six fours and two sixes in his unbeaten 40 for DCC who were at one stage 18-3.
Rockel Reddy (20) and Abrahim Khan (18) added 37 for the first wicket before they were separated. Insford Charles (18), Dale Mendonca (13) and Shaquille Mosley (12) were the only other batsman to reach double figures for MSC as Man-of-the-Match Tevin Imlack took 4-22.
Off-spinner Insford Charles had 2-10 in a losing cause for MSC who colleted the runner-up trophy at the presentation after the game.
GCA President Roger Harper said he was pleased the day was blessed with sunshine and good cricket to have a final at a time when bad weather was affecting local cricket.
“I would like to congratulate the DCC for winning and MSC for reaching the final despite the hurdles they had to endure,” Harper said. At present MSC is without a ground to practice due to work being done at their ground.
Harper also thanked the sponsors for their continued support and for GYO for making their ground available, while GCA Vice-President Neil Barry announced the various outstanding performers who were all presented with beautiful trophies. DCC ‘A’ beat DCC ‘B’ and MSC got past GYO in the semi-finals.
National under-15 left-hander Brandon Chanderpaul, the son of Test batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul, scored 818 runs in the competition and was named the Most Valuable player in the league competition and the tournament’s top batsman, while Sankar who took 26 wickets, was named the competition’s best bowler. MSC’s Tevin Campbell, who has now migrated, was named the tournament’s best Wicketkeeper.
Barry said that the GCA and BrainStreet was delighted that the competition produced four National under-15 players in Chanderpaul, Sankar, Rupee and Michael Salim.
Colette Jordon represented BrainStreet and its CEO Lance Hinds and she told the youths that while they were playing for recreation they were also preparing themselves for a future career in cricket and should always work hard for success. (Sean Devers)
