Cop promoted during Scout’s Day ceremony
An officer in the Guyana Police Force was given an ‘on the spot’ promotion yesterday at the opening ceremony for Scout’s Day at the Police Officers Mess Annexe, Eve Leary.
Police Constable Patrick Reynolds was commended for his exemplary work in the Force as well as his dedication and commitment to the Guyana Police Force Scout Group(s).
He was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal.
Commissioner of Police, Henry Greene, while addressing the gathering which included 75 youth members, acknowledged that Linden (Region 10) has produced over 400 police scouts to date.
He said that Region 10 has proven to be the area with the largest production of scouts who are trained in various areas and it is expected that these youths be true leaders and take the nation forward.
“Our challenge is to fight crime using scouts. As officers of the force, we must help scouts develop, see it as a challenge, as one of our crime fighting tactics.”
Commanders and senior officers of various divisions were implored to create scout offices in their districts. It must be noted that the Guyana Police Force is currently working on establishing dens in specified areas.
One is presently being created at Agricola, East Bank Demerara (EBD).

The scouts were urged to qualify themselves in certain areas such as completing driving courses, becoming accomplished dog handlers and practicing photography etc.
It is hoped that there will be at least 1,500 scouts under the Guyana Police Force shortly, and this will assist in executing duties which will benefit the country in the long run.
Commissioner Greene awarded $200,000 for work by scouts of Georgetown, $200,000 for work in Agricola, $250,000 for work in West Berbice, $300,000 for Linden and $100,000 for the work being executed at the Scout Office.
Julisa Charles, Surika Spencer and Dwight Bonus of the Linden Police Scout group and Anik Reid and Lashana Saul, both of the Georgetown Police Scout group, all agreed that their stint in the association has proven to be beneficial in numerous ways.
The teenagers were exposed to various activities and training which include camping, marching, sporting games, Gymkhana events, pioneering, backwoodsman cooking, communication classes, first aid techniques and community projects.
“Once a scout always a scout” were the words of these youth members.
