Dear Editor,
I read with amusement a letter from Mr Laurence Louis which is in response to one from Mr. Desmond Fernandes on the state of the Agriculture Sector in Region One.
Mr. Louis forgot to close his letter with the words “adapted from Grimm’s Fairy Tales”.
Mr. Editor, Region One is indeed lacking in regular and tangible support from the Agriculture Sector.
The Hosororo Agriculture Station is a Ghost town. There is no activity there – we from this area know of a Field Station which always sported plants for citrus, pears, peppers etc. The Field Station also had Extension Officers and different breeds of livestock for cross production. Our schoolchildren were taken on trips to the Station to be educated on budding and grafting etc.
The level of support which Mr. Louis boasts of rendering to the Sector surely does not translate to much when one observes the quantity of produce which is now being shipped on the North West Steamer. Check it out!!!
An additional problem for the farmers, is the fact that proper markets have gone downstream hence the minute number of (Hucksters) now plying the route to purchase the micro supplies.
There was a time when EDDOES were taken from Georgetown to be sold at Kumaka!!!!!!
Hope Mr. Louis finds a market for his facts while at the same time accepting the FACT that the Agriculture Sector in Region One does need urgent attention.
Let us not behave like the proverbial ostrich here.
