The National Milling Company of Guyana (NAMILCO) has introduced for the first time two new products during the ongoing Berbice Expo and Trade Fair at the Albion Ground in Berbice.
The products, parsad flour mix and halwa flour mix are hitting the market and Berbicians have the first opportunity to sample foods made from the products.
The Berbice Expo is where the items are being showcased for the first time.
According to Quality Control Technician, Taijawattie Williams, the items are in re-sealable packets, “and they can keep fresh; the spices we have in the products will still be there, they can still smell it”.
The Toasted Wheat Germ has been re-packaged (in re-sealable packets) and being marketed at the exposition as well. “They can use from it and they can be able to re-seal it as well”, Williams said. The Wheat Germ, she said, is “very nutritious, apart from being high in fiber, iron and many important nutrients.” It also lowers cholesterol and has “always been in the health line and graded as one of the top healthiest product to use and because of that, we see the need to actually ensure the public gets this product at a reasonable price”.
She added that the ideas behind creating the parsad and halwa mixes were to make life easier for the general public. “Most people would want to make a parsad but don’t always get it nice like somebody else. They would always ask about the recipe; they will ask about the flour blend and so. Management saw it as something the consumers are looking for, and we decided to give them something that they can use”, she noted.
The recipes are behind the packets and persons just have to follow the recipes to get an excellent dish. The items are all made in Guyana. She said that NAMILCO will be expanding marketing and promotion strategies for the two new products “until we have something used by all and they [the consumers] are comfortable with it [the products]”.
Foreigners she said can come and purchase the products since the authentic Guyanese foods are difficult to get overseas.
The parsad and halwa flour mix are being sold at factory prices, $280 for 600g packets. The Toasted Wheat Germ costs $250 for a 330g packet. “The packaging was to ensure that the consumer can be able to use and re-use the product until it is finished and still maintain its freshness,” she noted.
Other NAMILCO products available at the Expo include the Italian Pesto Mix Flour, Wheat- up, Pholourie Mix, High fiber flour, Self- raising flour, among others.
