The Guyanese boxers opened competition at the ALBA Games in Venezuela yesterday and are due to continue today. Reports also state that Guyana secured its first medal with a bronze in the karate competition, which is to be confirmed.
Last evening Stephan Gouveia was the face Jimenez of the Dominican Republic; Ron Smith vs Correa of Cuba and Mark Pierre vs Morroy of Colombia.
Today, Imran Khan meets K. Canon of Venezuela and Bert Braithwaite meets S. Hernandez of Venezuela. Samuel Primo has drawn the bye. The table tennis competition started yesterday and the Guyana Women’s team lost in the semi-finals 1-3 to the Dominican Republic. Also the Men’s team also lost in the semi-finals 1-3 to Bolivia. Today is a rest day for tennis and the doubles and individuals starts on Thursday.
According to team official Hugh Denbow, yesterday was not as bad as Monday when most of the athletes were affected by the thin air. Management had to put measures in place to help the athletes, purchasing items to aid their recovery and physical up keep including gatorade. The official noted that the boxers appeared to be weathering the climate the best.
Major challenge now is the very windy and cold nights, he informed.
