A few hours before the bundle of joy entered the world her mother Sam, began experiencing normal labour pains and was taken to the delivery room for delivery, as per usual. Sam said she was subsequently told that she had to be incised to allow for natural birth.
The17-year-old mother said, “I try and try but ah couldn’t push de baby out”, hence the doctors used a “clamp” like equipment (pair of forceps) to grip the head of the baby.
“When me baby come out he didn’t breathing, or crying, or anything,” said Sam.
The child spent three weeks in the nursery at the Georgetown Public Hospital before being discharged.
It was only three months after little Divya was born did the family realize that the child was not responding to faces or colours. They immediately consulted the nurses at the clinic and were referred to both an ophthalmologist and an audiologist.
The diagnostics later revealed that Divya was blind, and would be crippled for life. The doctor also said this was the result of brain damage caused by the use of the forceps.
The child’s head is indented because of the force with which the Forceps was used.
Kaieteur News understands that the Vacuum has replaced this equipment around the world because of the threat of skull fracture and other injuries which can result in life long brain damage.
She is one of the very few babies to be delivered using the forceps and is one of the 50 children in the world to survive from this ordeal though many don’t live past three years (google.com).
Ever since Divya was born her family was constantly told that the child doesn’t have long to live. Nevertheless Divya is now one year eight months.
However she is constantly being admitted to the hospital usually because of her mild pneumonia or regular seizure attacks.
The family is devastated because its members find it difficult to look after little Divya at times. Her paternal grandparents have since volunteered to look after her as they consider her to be God’s precious gift and love her beyond compare.
Her grandmother, Sandra, said that she gets aggravated and wants to lash out when she thinks of all the carelessness and negligence portrayed by the G.P.H.C. “Dem ain’t care about nobody; they just care about their pay cheque and if them know that them ain’t really want save people’s lives they shouldn’t ah taken up -the profession.”
She also said that the family didn’t want to pursue the matter since Divya still seeks regular medical attention at the G.P.H.C and they don’t want her to be victimized.
Divya’s grandfather related that Divya can only eat baby food and drink porridge and water. He added that she is a ‘two-month-old baby in a one-year-old body’ and especially with her illness she has to be taken care of 24 hours a day.
Members of the extended family are calling on the authorities at the GPHC and the Minister of Health to ban tools like the forceps and to make sure that they aren’t used hereafter.
