Rain tampered with what was to be a pulsating final day of athletic rivalries among servicemen yesterday at the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Base Camp Ayanganna Ground, Thomas Lands in the 2011 Inter-Unit Track and Field Championships.
Inclement weather forced a postponement of the event to next Wednesday. All systems were in place for the conclusion of the three-day competition that began on Tuesday with finals in some field events. The competition had continued on Wednesday.
After the initial two days of competition in field events, mostly, defending champions, Defence Headquarters (DHQ) is comfortably ahead on 123 ½ points. Base Camp Stephenson is second on 71 points while Base Camp Ayanganna closely follows on 60 ½ points.
Training Corps takes the fourth position in the points standing with 44 points while First Infantry Battalion completes the top five competing units tightly behind on 39 points.
The Coast Guards are on 30 points with Second Infantry Battalion on 22 points. The combined team that include, Special Corps, Artillery and Coastal Battalion has seven points with Engineers in the cellar position among the nine competing units with four points. The annual Inter-Unit Championships is held to select the GDF team for the annual Inter-Service Track and Field Championships. After surrendering the title to the Guyana Police Force last year, the Defence Force will host the event this year in a bid to re-capture the title.
