Dear Editor,
I am writing to acquaint you and your readers with a new novel on Guyana by Chaitram Singh, author of “The Flour Convoy”. The new novel is “The February 23rd Coup”, which tells a story of political intrigue, romance, and adventure.
Set in Guyana and Suriname, the novel fictionalizes a military overthrow attempt and its consequences. While some of the themes addressed in the work are commonplace in the Third World, “The February 23rd Coup” is in no way prescriptive. Rather, it is a cautionary tale of what could happen when the avenues of political change are closed or manipulated, and it provides democratic societies with a window into the mindset of Third World military leaders who might be inclined to disrupt democratic political processes.
Readers might want to know as well that the tale of political intrigue so well laid out in the novel is punctuated by a romance between the Assistant US Military Attache and a local attorney. The elaboration of this trans-cultural liaison is presented with tremendous delicacy and sensitivity, uncommon to a work of this kind.
“The Flour Convoy” heightened my interest in Guyana, its people and its politics. However, while “The Flour Convoy” transported the reader into the halls of power and abuse of power, “The February 23rd Coup” is a romantic tale about idealists who attempted to right those wrongs. As an American, and one privileged to be one of the early readers of the novel, I wanted to share my admiration for a piece of work so masterfully arranged and so powerfully written.
