Forty-one-year-old Roy Saunders is still nursing wounds about his body after he was brutally chopped by his stepfather “Carl” on Sunday, last, at their Mocha residence, East Bank Demerara.
The man, who is currently in the Male Surgical Ward of the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC) sustained severe injuries which include a chop to his left knee that was deep enough to damage the bone, another chop to his left hand, and the most serious, a chop across his right eye.
The chop to his eye is so serious that Saunders cannot see clearly. Kaieteur News understands that the man underwent surgery and visited the ophthalmologist during the course of this week. He was given the impression that he will “lose the one eye”.
The incident took place on Sunday, last, when Saunders’ mother was attending a church service and the man was cooking. There was no argument prior to the chopping so his stepfather’s actions took him by surprise.
“We never had problems. When I see he come behind me with the knife I duck and walk out to call me mother on the cell. Before I know it I hear the neighbour them shout that I must watch out that Carl got a knife behind me.
“Like he want to chop me in me back but I turn around and so I get chop to my face and I was fighting to hold he back. Is the neighbours them separate he from me”
According to the injured man, “Carl” has been living in the house (his mother’s residence) for the past four years and they never had an issue. They just did not speak to each other unless necessary.
Saunders’s mother is upset about the incident and cannot come to terms with what caused “Carl” to react that way.
“Carl”, who is 61 years old, is said to be incarcerated at the Camp Street Prison until the court date for the matter which is scheduled for August 19.
