A Dwayne Ali 15th minute blue ball goal was all that was needed to lead BK International Western Tigers A team to the Georgetown Zone title of the inaugural GT&T FastBall knock-out football competition on Thursday night at the GFC Ground.
Reggae Boyz, a mixture of past Alpha United players with a few younger ones, were not able to stop the forward thrust of the Western Tigers A team which now will have bragging rights as the best in the FastBall business in the City.
Both teams were victorious in their respective semi-final games which preceded the final. Western Tigers A brushed aside the challenge of War Mongers 3-0; Ali again showing his liking for the blue ball as he netted in the penultimate minute of the game, Nedd Fraser converting the other in the 18th minute.
Reggae Boyz were in a rampaging mood in their clash against BK International Western Tigers B team which they banged 4-0. Shawn Bishop netted a hat-trick. Quincy Madramootoo tucked in the other in the 26th minute.
In an exciting exhibition game which preceded the final, two East Coast Demerara teams set the GFC ground alight. Enterprise, an All Indian team, showed glimpses of class despite their close loss to True Warriors, a Buxton based side.
True Warriors took the lead in the 6th minute through Dellon Critchlow but that advantage was neutralized 3 minutes later when Parmanand Dindyal found the back of the nets for Enterprise.
Enterprise matched their more accomplished rivals play for play, created some chances but were not able to sink their shots.
Experience, in the long run saw True Warriors to victory, Orson Wellington firing in the winner with four minutes to full time.
The dust has now been settled in terms of the preliminary round of competition which saw over 200 teams competing.
Only 32-teams remain standing and the battle for a place in the final and 1st prize of One Million Dollars set for August 7 at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence will intensify from tomorrow evening at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground when roun-of-32 action kicks off.
