– Western Union hands over sponsored uniforms
By Edison Jefford
The national basketball contingent paid a courtesy call on Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Dr. Frank Anthony yesterday morning where he encouraged them to be good ambassadors when Guyana face the region at the Caribbean Championships.
The ministry provided track suits for the team and was instrumental in procuring tax waivers for them at the airport. Anthony stated that he anticipates that his ministry and the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation will continue to work to develop the sport.
The team departed this morning for the Bahamas where they will begin competition on Sunday. They followed their visit to the Minister with a presentation at Western Union where sponsored-uniforms and warm-up jerseys were formally handed over.
Marketing Manager at Western Union, Natheeah King-Mendonca stressed the importance of the contribution when she said that the team will have an impressive image. She said that they have spent in excess of $200,000 to make the team look good.
“We are committed to helping basketball move forward this year. I urged the players to listen to their coach and be disciplined at all times. This is a major investment and I hope that they’ll keep Guyana’s flag flying high at the event,” King-Mendonca said.
She said that the players should not allow their egos to distract them from their goal. She was of the view that they should remain humble, understand what it cost to get them there and work as a unit to ‘bring home the bacon’ for the first time in history.
Guyana has never won the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Senior Men’s title. Their best placing to-date was third place 11 years ago. Guyana is returning to the event with a locally composed team after an entire US-based team represented Guyana in 2007 in Puerto Rico.
“We were happy to assist. We could have done more but the notice came a little late. However, it was something we wanted to do based on our commitment to sport,” King-Mendonca continued. She wished the team well and urged them to be patriots.
In accepting the training apparel and uniforms, national basketball captain, Steve Neils Jr. stated that he is impressed with the quality of the uniforms and thanked Western Union for helping the country look good on foreign soil.
“Thank you for this contribution. We are looking good and as a result, we will continue to represent and support Western Union,” he said.
